Song of the Day: Drown the Sky (ft. RØRY) – William Black

Song of the Day: Drown the Sky (ft. RØRY) – William Black

William Black isn’t a well-known DJ/producer (yet), but his emotional, heartfelt style, similar to Illenium and Dabin, is becoming more and more popular. Originally out of Orange County, California, he’ll be with Illenium on tour through the end of 2019.

“Drown the Sky” speaks to the struggles of addiction, as this is something that both he and vocalist RØRY have had to deal with in the past. He explains, “Right before I got sober, I had this moment where I finally realized that I couldn’t go on with all the pain I was causing to myself, and more importantly, those who cared for me. In that moment I finally wanted to change. RØRY had recently gotten sober and we connected having been through such a similar experience despite our different backgrounds. The hope is that ‘Drown The Sky’ helps others to know they’re not alone and that there is a way forward.”

“Drown the Sky” lyrics:

Breathe it in, breathe it out
The  weight of it all puts me on the ground
Nothing  but darkness all around
Empty bottles of bitter pills
Gimme the poison, we’re going down
Me  barely breathing, the only sound

Ooh,  will you hold my hand as I’m falling?
Ooh, I can hear the darkness calling

Tonight  we’re gonna drown the sky
Raise your glasses one last time
When we’re down from this high
You won’t find me by your side
Tonight  we’re gonna drown the sky
Drown it in the blood-red wine
When we’re down from this high
You won’t find me by your side
So let’s drown the sky tonight

So let’s drown the sky tonight

Now I’m blind, I cannot see
With or without you I’ve gotta leave
Find my way back so I can be complete

Ooh, will you hold my hand as I’m falling?
Ooh, I can hear the darkness calling

Tonight we’re gonna drown the sky
Raise your glasses one last time
When we’re down from this high
You won’t find me by your side
Tonight we’re gonna drown the sky
Drown it in the blood-red wine
When we’re down from this high
You won’t find me by your side
So let’s drown the sky tonight

So let’s drown the sky tonight
So let’s drown the sky tonight
So let’s drown the sky tonight

Song of the Day: Griztonics – GRiZ & Subtronics

Song of the Day: Griztonics – GRiZ & Subtronics

“Ooh this shit be hittin’ different”. Perfectly described. The collaboration between GRiZ and Subtronics (bet you can’t guess where they got the name of the song from” is so infectious that people who don’t even like EDM can’t help but dance to it. It starts off like any other big room type with large, in-your-face, brass-like synths but after the drop we get a smooth, almost fluttering synth that is just so smooth. This back and forth continues throughout the song giving it a bouncy texture that’s irresistible. It’s incredibly popular for DJs to include in sets too because of that amazing first hook, so you’ll surely hear it time and time again.

If you’re not familiar with GRiZ, he hails from Michigan (but currently lives in Denver) and his productions typically fall under some slightly different EDM genres like glitch hop, electro-funk, and future funk. Similar artists to GRiZ include Big Gigantic, Gramatik, Pretty Lights, KOAN Sound, The Floozies, and Paper Diamond. His live sets are amazing as well as he’s an expert on the saxophone and breaks it out nearly every set.

Song of the Day: Good Parts – Justin Caruso

Song of the Day: Good Parts – Justin Caruso

“Good Parts”, the new single from Los Angeles native Justin Caruso, perfectly emphasizes one of the emotions after a break-up; remembering all of the good times had. For a relatively sad song, it’s fairly light and upbeat. Maedi, the vocalist also out of L.A. has the perfect voice and tone for this track. The smooth plucks in the chorus are slowly covered by a piano sound which then perfectly blends into a bouncy drop. He has an absolute talent for producing songs that get people dancing.

Lyrics:

It’s over now, we both know that
What we said in anger we can’t take back
But your t-shirt’s in the bottom of my dresser drawer
Since I’m sharing, I still wear it when I miss you more

Know you’re moving on
It’s what we gotta do
And I hope she loves you
The way I used to
Like the night we drove for hours
Just to see the view
Woulda gone with you wherever

There’ll be a day
When you say my name
And she’ll ask you all about us
When you explain
Yeah, how will it taste?
When you’re telling her how it was

So don’t you leave the good parts out
All the times I never let you down
Don’t you remember all the fun we had
Now you’re looking back
Was it all that bad?
Don’t you leave the good parts

Don’t you leave the good parts

Do you have to mention that fight we had?
Screaming in the kitchen over broken glass
You said your mother always thought I was the selfish type
So I called my ex ’cause I knew that’d ruin your night

There’ll be a day
When you say my name
And she’ll ask you all about us
When you explain
Yeah, how will it taste?
When you’re telling her how it was

So don’t you leave the good parts out
All the times I never let you down
Don’t you remember all the fun we had
Now you’re looking back
Was it all that bad?
Don’t you leave the good parts
Don’t you leave the good parts…

Don’t you leave the good parts
Don’t you leave the good parts
Don’t you leave the good parts

Song of the Day: Bout U – AVE & EFX

Song of the Day: Bout U – AVE & EFX

“Bout U” has one of the most satisfying second drops imaginable. The first drop is borderline false with the chopped up synths not giving the full, powerful effect. The minimal first drop is what makes the second so, so satisfying as it fills in the gaps that you audibly wanted the first time around. The chorus is so smooth and a great juxtaposition to the slow verses. Overall, the track is a good blend of chill and driving which is quite a difficult effect to pull-off. Now go ahead a take a listen for yourself.
